I’m Stephanie Cox, MS, LMHC, a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist and EFCT Supervisor. I’m also the founder of The Better Relationship, where I help EFCT and couples therapists feel less lost, less alone, and more confident on the path from “I love this model” to “I actually know what I’m doing.”
I wish I could tell you I nailed EFCT from day one because I had great supervision.
The truth? I had fantastic supervision… and I was still spinning.
I’d done Externship, I was in Core Skills, I had a brilliant supervisor, and yet I kept:
Walking into sessions feeling shaky and overthinking every Tango move
Using supervision like “case venting” instead of a focused certification tool
Treating taping as something I’d do “later when I was better”
My problem wasn’t a lack of training or support.
My problem was that I didn’t have a clear way to see the path or use what I was getting in a strategic way.
Once I started treating EFCT and certification like a journey I could actually map—instead of a mysterious mountain that other people magically climbed—everything changed. I became certified in about 17 months, not because I rushed or cheated the process, but because I finally knew how to aim my time, my supervision, my taping, and my energy.
Now I want to help other therapists skip years of that lonely, expensive confusion.
That’s why I created The Better Relationship as a home for:
Roadmaps like Fast-Track EFCT
Ongoing skills spaces like the EFCT Skills Lab
Certification-focused supervision in small pods
Application support for tapes and case write-ups
And, yes, ready-made resources you can use with your own couples
My goal isn’t to replace your supervisor or your trainings.
My goal is to help you actually get traction from them—so your hours, your tapes, and your internal world are all moving in the same direction.
When I’m not helping therapists with EFCT, I’m still in the room with real couples through my group practice, Better Being Therapy Services, which keeps me honest and grounded in the realities of this work. I bring that same mix of research-based EFCT, real-life clinical experience, and “okay, but what do I say next?” practicality into everything I teach.
If you’ve ever thought, “I love this model, but I feel like I’m secretly flailing,” you’re my people.
You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You just haven’t been given a clear map yet.
That’s what I’m here for.
