Managing Your Jealousy in Relationships: 3 Strategies to Build Trust and Confidence

When we are struggling with jealousy it can feel debilitating. It can also drive us to do and say things that we don't mean, and regret but then we feel as if we can't get out of the spiral. Jealousy is one of those emotions that can feel overwhelming, even when we know it’s not helping. Whether it comes from past experiences or personal insecurities, jealousy can create a wedge between you and your partner. The good news? Jealousy can be managed—and even transformed into a source of growth and connection.
What I've Seen
In my work with couples, I see how jealousy can creep in unexpectedly, even in strong relationships. It’s usually rooted in a desire to feel valued and secure, but when left unchecked, it often leads to conflict. Here’s the thing: jealousy doesn’t have to be a relationship-killer. By building trust and confidence, we can handle jealousy in a way that strengthens our connection instead of weakening it.
What To Do
One of the keys to managing jealousy is “Turning Inward Before Turning Outward.” Instead of immediately reacting to jealous feelings, take a moment to check in with yourself. Jealousy is often fueled by our own insecurities, and by recognizing this, we’re better equipped to approach the situation calmly and constructively.
How To Do It
Here are three strategies to help manage jealousy and build trust with your partner:
Acknowledge Your Feelings
When jealousy arises, recognize it without judgment. Say to yourself, “I’m feeling jealous right now,” and allow yourself a moment to feel it. This step alone can defuse some of the tension and help you understand the root of your feelings.Communicate Openly and Honestly
Share your feelings with your partner using non-blaming language. For example, say, “I feel insecure when…” rather than “You make me jealous.” This invites your partner into a conversation about your feelings without placing blame.Focus on Building Self-Confidence
Often, jealousy is linked to our own insecurities. By working on self-confidence—through activities that make you feel fulfilled and valued—you’ll find that jealous feelings become less intense over time. Remember, a strong sense of self is a foundation for trust in any relationship.
BONUS Insight: Remember that controlling your partner is never the answer. Putting rules, restrictions and qualifications on their behavior in order to make YOU feel "better" will only strengthen your paranoia and deepen the divide. True freedom from jealousy means being able to live freely with trust, without you controlling your partner.
